Triangle United Way ..... Elevating King Holiday To New Heights

THE 2010 PROJECTS WILL BE POSTED IN MID DECEMBER
On January 16, 1986, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’ s birthday was observed as a federal holiday for the first time. In an effort to turn the holiday into a day of service, former U.S. Senator Harris Wofford of Pennsylvania and Congressman John Lewis of Atlanta co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act that was signed in 1994 President Bill Clinton.

In the spring of 2005, Triangle United Way staff and Bruce Lightner, Co-Chairperson MLK Celebration Committee, Inc., begin building on the idea of conducting a Triangle-wide community service project in celebration of the National MLK Day Observance. A planning committee was formed, including members of local civic groups and existing MLK Celebration members. The goal of the planning committee was to figure out how to successfully create an three-county event day of service celebration without interfering with existing MLK Day activities.

On the annual MLK Holiday, in conjunction with the Triangle United Way, this project will involve thousands of volunteers to go into various communities in Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill & Morrisville to provide hand's on service to residents.

PURPOSE: The MLK Day Community Service Program will join hundreds of other cities across the nation who honor the King Holiday by mobilizing thousands of everyday citizens in service projects that connect people to King�s philosophy of service and brotherly love. The MLK Day Community Service Program will expand involvement in the King Holiday by youth, parents, grandparents and organizations across the region who care about valuing diversity and keeping Dr. King�s dream alive. The goal is to ignite the spirit of community by providing a quality experience for volunteers of all ages and the opportunity to create lasting results across the Triangle region.
