The North Carolina Martin
Luther King Resource Center
Slated to begin construction in the Spring of 2010 adjacent to
a new Civic & Convention Center Complex in downtown Raleigh,
North Carolina, this new $8 million state-of-the-art facility is
being designed to be a cultural magnet in providing a wide mix of
services, educational materials and products in order to attract
thousands of visitors and tourists from around the state and nation
into the City's core. The emerging research complex is also envisioned
to become the "crown-jewel" of innovative proactive programs
designed to improve race relations and solve chronic social problems
in communities throughout the region..
The King Center is being formulated to serve as a one-of-a-kind
regional "think-tank" in cooperation with area colleges
and universities, businesses, corporations and foundations. The
Center will provide on-going study and inquire into the root causes
of racial disparities and look for and develop tangible solutions.
The King Center organizers start with the premise that cultural
differences naturally exist between races but overt hate, discrimination,
faith intolerance and bigotry are learned behaviors. Just as other
social ills are afforded research resources, so should the study
and eradication of racism and racial practices. Our society becomes
more ethnically diverse each year and we are called upon with a
moral mandate, to find creative ways to help grow the economy and
give all groups of citizens safe and productive communities.
Upon completion of the physical structure, the Center will bring
into its research department 12-15 of the best and brightest researchers
in the fields of psychology, sociology, human resource development,
theology, public safety and economics. The new MLK Resource Center
is being designed by nationally acclaimed architect, The Freelon
Group, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
